Basic Introduction to Pingle Moon Persimmon
The Moon Persimmon, commonly known as persimmon cake, is renowned for its size, round shape, thick flesh, soft texture, and sweetness. It is made by peeling and sun-drying selected water persimmons. The flesh is a reddish-brown and semi-transparent, while the skin is coated with a layer of white persimmon honey frost. Its shape is round, resembling the full moon in mid-autumn, hence the name “Moon Persimmon.” It is primarily produced in Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County and Pingle County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, with a history of cultivation and processing spanning over 400 years. The fruit of the Gongcheng Moon Persimmon is beautiful, brightly colored, large, thin-skinned, thick-fleshed, seedless, and sweet, making it one of the best varieties of persimmons. The Moon Persimmon cakes (also known as Moon Persimmon Red Cakes) are sweet like syrup, shaped like a full moon, with red translucent flesh, soft texture, and a fragrant taste. Historically, they have always been court tribute items and are also a traditional export product of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, enjoying great popularity and favor among consumers in Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asian countries, and Mediterranean countries.
Nutritional Value
The Moon Persimmon contains a lot of carbohydrates, with 10.8 grams per 100 grams, mainly sucrose, glucose, and fructose, which is why persimmons taste so sweet. Other nutrients are present in small amounts, including a small quantity of fat, protein, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamin C. Additionally, persimmons are rich in pectin, a water-soluble dietary fiber that has an excellent effect on regulating bowel movements and maintaining a healthy balance of intestinal flora. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Moon Persimmon has a sweet and astringent taste and is cold in nature. It has functions such as clearing heat and relieving dryness, moistening the lungs and resolving phlegm, softening hardness, quenching thirst and stimulating saliva production, strengthening the spleen, treating dysentery, and stopping bleeding. It can help relieve symptoms such as constipation, pain or bleeding from hemorrhoids, dry cough, sore throat, and hypertension. Therefore, the Moon Persimmon is a natural health food for patients with chronic bronchitis, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and both internal and external hemorrhoids. If the persimmon leaves are boiled or steeped in hot water as tea, they can promote metabolism, lower blood pressure, increase coronary artery blood flow, and have a cough-relieving and phlegm-resolving effect.
