Jiyuan is located in the northwest of Henan Province, south of the Yellow River, north of the Taihang Mountains, west of Mount Wangwu, and east of plains; it is the legendary hometown of Yu Gong, the character from the fable “Yu Gong Moves the Mountain.” The main area for growing Jiyuan walnuts is in the Mount Wangwu region, which has rich topography and vegetation and abundant forestland. The soil type is brown earth, formed from the leaching and precipitation of limestone and aeolian loess, with a pH value of 7.0–8.0 (slightly alkaline). The soil is deep and loose, with high organic matter content and good drainage, making it suitable for walnut cultivation. There are over 200 rivers of various sizes within Jiyuan's borders. Surface water resources amount to 257 million m³, and groundwater resources total 182 million m³. There are three large reservoirs in the walnut production area, providing ample water resources of good quality that fully meet the irrigation needs of walnut production. Jiyuan has a warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 14.1°C, an extreme minimum temperature of -20°C, and an extreme maximum temperature of 43.4°C. The annual accumulated temperature above 10°C is 4539.6°C, and the average frost-free period is 223 days. The average annual sunshine duration is 2375.4 hours, with a sunshine percentage of 54%. The average annual rainfall is 650mm, of which 427.7mm falls between June and September, accounting for 65.8% of the annual total. The climate is characterized by dry springs with strong winds, abundant rain in summer and autumn, cold and dry winters, long daylight hours, high radiation energy, suitable light conditions, sufficient heat, a long frost-free period, concurrent water and heat, and large day-night temperature differences, all of which make it very suitable for walnut cultivation.
Nutritional Value
Walnuts are rich in vitamins B and E, which can prevent cellular aging and promote brain health and longevity. Walnut kernels contain linoleic acid as well as calcium, phosphorus, and iron, making them ideal for skin care. Regular consumption of amber walnuts can moisturize the skin and darken hair, as well as help prevent premature graying and hair loss. Walnut oil is fresh, pure, and nutritious, with a mild taste. Its fatty acid profile is similar to that of breast milk, making it easy to digest and absorb. It is a healthful edible oil for children during their developmental years, women during pregnancy, and mothers recovering postpartum. Walnut oil contains unsaturated fatty acids at ≥92%, with linoleic acid Ω-6 at ≥56% and linolenic acid Ω-3 at ≥14%. It is also rich in natural vitamin A (VA) and vitamin D (VD). Its acidity is ≤0.5, with a mild taste and no off-flavors, retaining its original, pure flavor. This makes it especially suitable for babies' tender stomachs. Every part of the walnut is a treasure: the phospholipids in walnuts are beneficial for brain health; the oleic acid and linolenic acid in walnut oil are unsaturated fatty acids. Consuming walnuts during pregnancy is beneficial for fetal brain development; children who eat more walnuts become smarter; adults who eat more walnuts can enjoy moisturized hair and protection against dryness; and middle-aged and elderly people who regularly consume walnuts can prevent cardiovascular diseases.
