Basic Introduction to Huxian Grapes

Huxian Grapes are a specialty of Huxian County, Shaanxi Province, and are a product with a Chinese Geographical Indication. Huxian County is located in the middle of the Plain and has a warm temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate. The seasons are distinct in temperature, moisture, and dryness, and it is rich in , heat, and water resources, making it suitable for agricultural production and diverse operations. It is known as the “Silver Huxian.” The cultivation of grapes in Huxian has a long history, and the famous line “grape wine in a luminous cup” by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Han has been passed down through the ages. Varieties such as “Hutai No. 8,” Red Seedless, Red Noble, and Xinhua No. 1 have excellent quality and have earned honors like “China's Hutai Grape Homeland” and “One of China's Ten High-Quality Grape Bases.”

Grapes are rich in magnesium, vitamin C, and iron and have certain medicinal values, serving as an important energy-providing food and tonic. In every 100 grams of American grapes, water comprises 81%, containing 0.7 grams of , 0.3 grams of fat, and 0.2 grams of carbohydrates, along with 0.9 grams of fiber and 263.7 kJ of calories. Additionally, grape seed extract possesses strong antioxidant properties, effectively improving varicose veins and preventing the recurrence of heart disease.

Historical Folklore

The main grape-producing areas are concentrated in the northern plains, which geologically belong to part of the Wei graben. According to morphological features, they can be divided into alluvial fans at the foot of the northern slope of the Qinling Mountains, marginal depressions, loess plateaus, Wei River terraces, and floodplain areas, with elevations ranging from 600 to 388 meters. The terrain slopes gently from south to north and from west to east, with deep and fertile soil, making it a suitable area for growing grapes.

Additionally, the cultivation of grapes in Huxian has a long history. There are records of cultivating grapes since the Zhou Dynasty, accompanied by beautiful sayings such as “wind rushing under the sunset, birds singing in the night sky.” The poem “grape wine in a night luminous cup” by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Han has also been passed down through the ages.
