Caojia Pears are produced in Renshou County, Meishan City, Sichuan Province. The county's terrain is mainly hilly, with higher elevations in the northwest and lower in the east. Renshou County has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an annual average temperature of 17.4°C, annual rainfall of 1009.4 millimeters, annual sunshine of 1196.6 hours, and a frost-free period of 312 days, making it suitable for pear cultivation. The production area of Caojia Pear covers the administrative regions of Caojia Town, Zhongxiang Town, Hexing Township, Cihang Town, Manjing Town, Zhaojia Township, Jingxian Township, and Yucheng Township in Renshou County, Meishan City, Sichuan Province.
As of 2022, pear cultivation in Caojia Town reached 31,000 mu (approximately 20.67 square kilometers), with an annual output of 93 million catties (approximately 465 million kilograms) and an annual value of 240 million yuan. A pear industry layout centered on June Snow pears, Golden Flower pears, and Fushui pears has been formed. Caojia Town is renowned as a “Centennial Pear Village,” with more than 70,000 pear trees over 100 years old and over 1,700 trees over 400 years old. It has initially developed pear-themed tourism experiences such as “enjoying pear blossoms in spring, picking pears in summer, savoring pear feasts in autumn, and supplementing with pear syrup in winter.”
Through over a hundred years of continuous development, the pear cultivation area in Renshou County has reached 61,500 mu. Caojia Pear has become a pillar industry in the specialized agricultural industrialization of Renshou. In 2004, it was awarded “Sichuan Province Pollution-Free Production Base,” “Well-Known Tourist Product of Meishan City” by the Meishan Municipal Government, and “Eco-Friendly Park of Sichuan Province.” In 2007, it received national “Green Product” certification and “Well-Known Trademark of Meishan City.” Caojia Pear has been widely reported by major news outlets and enjoys a high reputation both within and outside the province. Historical and Folk Customs
During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the “Renshou County Gazetteer” records that Caojia Town began planting pears. The oldest existing pear tree is over 400 years old. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, pears from Dongshanli (present-day Donglian Village) were designated as tribute to the imperial court, earning them a reputation across Sichuan.
Awards and Honors for Caojia Pears
During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1654-1722), Caojia Pears were designated as “Imperial Tribute Pears.”
In December 2017, the former General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China approved geographical indication product protection for “Caojia Pear.”
