Yongde Mango-1

Basic Introduction of Yongde Mango

Mango, the “ of Fruits,” is a woody fruit adapted to subtropical climates. Yongde County is one of the few major production areas in the country. Its abundant tropical resources provide favorable conditions for mango growth. Through the continuous efforts of successive county governments, Yongde has become the largest mango production base in Yunnan Province, earning it the of “Mango Land” with its 43,000 mu of mango plantations.

Nutritional Value

The fruit contains sugar, protein, crude fiber, and particularly high levels of pro-vitamin A in the form of carotene, which is uncommon among fruits. Vitamin C content is also not low. Minerals, proteins, fats, sugars, etc., are other main nutritional components.

Product Characteristics

Mango, also known as mengguo, mangguo, mengguo, miwang, wangguo, and ampolo, belongs to the Anacardiaceae family. The shape of the mango is quite interesting: some are egg-shaped, while others are round, kidney-shaped, or heart-shaped; the skin color varies from light green to yellow and deep red; the flesh is yellow, fibrous, with varying degrees of sweetness and sourness, a pleasant aroma, and a lot of juice but a large stone. Mango combines the essence of tropical fruits and is hailed as the “King of Tropical Fruits.”

and Folklore

The cultivation of mangoes in Yongde County has a long history, dating back more than three hundred years. In the contracted land of Li 0 in Duande Village, Yongkang , there is a “Three-Year Mango” tree that is over three hundred years old and still bears a heavy crop, producing over 1,200 kilograms of fresh mangoes annually from a single tree. Wild mango trees can be seen everywhere in regions below 1,000 meters above sea level in Yongde County. Varieties include Xiaoxiang Mango and Three-Year Mango. According to Yunnan mango expert Li Zitian, Yongde County's hot zone is considered one of the origins of mangoes.

Since 1974, the Yongkang Forestry Station introduced Machesu mangoes for trial planting from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Crop Institute. By 1980, individual trees were yielding over 50 kilograms. In 1982, a 360-mu contiguous mango plantation was established in the Old Hut Village of Mengdi. Eleven varieties of mangoes were subsequently introduced from Xishuangbanna, and Li Zitian provided guidance on cultivation and management techniques. By 1987, these plantings had succeeded and were promoted throughout the farm. In 1987, the Yongde County government decided to use World Bank loans to develop commercial mango orchards, and by the end of 1989, 6,973 mu (including 4,000 mu in the farm) of commercial mango orchards had been planted across the county.
