Product Characteristics
1. Color: The peel is smooth and bright orange, the color is fresh and clear.
2. Size: Oranges grown on sunny branches are generally larger and medium-sized fruits tend to be of better quality because they receive more sunlight, usually develop normally, and have ample fruit flesh nutrition, making their taste fresher and sweeter.
3. Elasticity: Lightly press the fruit skin with your fingers; good elasticity indicates a thinner peel, a larger fruit heart, and full flesh.
4. Bottom: A clearly inwardly concave bottom on a citrus fruit indicates better maturity, a thinner peel, and more moisture.
Determining Authenticity
1. Look: Natural navel oranges may not have uniform colors, especially if they do not appear overly glossy or overly yellow or even red. The root end should be light yellow or dull yellow, and the peel should be orange-yellow with few fully yellow spots. If the peel appears otherwise, it might be waxed or treated in some other way. Be particularly cautious if you notice slight redness or red spots at the root end, cut marks, cut surfaces, or the peel.
2. Touch: The surface of a navel orange should not feel overly smooth; the peel should have at least some uneven texture. Otherwise, it could have been treated. Wipe: Although wax is used for preservation, if you're still unsure after looking and touching, use a damp cloth or wipe to rub the peel and watch for any redness, which might indicate coloring.
3. Scrape: For heavily waxed oranges, you can scrape off orange-red wax with your fingernails or a blade. The normal peel color should be a light yellow.
