Basic Introduction to Baozhu Pears from Chenggong

The Baozhu pears are produced in Chenggong County, a suburb of Kunming, and are a well-known specialty fruit in Yunnan . In September 2005, “Chenggong Baozhu Pears” were successfully registered with the Trademark of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, making them one of the five key brands developed by Chenggong County.

Nutritional Value

1. The pear's flesh is rich in pulp, glucose, and malic acid, among other organic acids. It also contains protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, iron, as well as , B1, vitamin B2, niacin, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

2. Fresh pears have a water content of up to 83%, with slightly fewer calories than apples, primarily derived from carbohydrates.

Product Characteristics

The Baozhu pear stands out among the many pear varieties in Yunnan. The fruit is round, typically weighing between 200-330 grams, with some reaching up to 500 grams. The is thin and light greenish-yellow, while the flesh is snowy white, crisp, tender, juicy, sweet, slightly fragrant, and leaves no residue after eating.

History and Folklore

The cultivation of Baozhu pears dates back several hundred years. Legend has it that during the Dali Kingdom era, a high monk named Baozhu came to Shuanchan City (-day Kunming) to preach and brought snow pear seedlings from Dali. These seedlings were then grafted onto superior local pear varieties in Chenggong, resulting in the creation of this famous fruit. In honor of the monk, the pears were named “Baozhu Pears.” Due to their high quality, they were once presented as tribute to the imperial court, and the place where they are grown became known as “Chenggong.”

Ways to Enjoy Baozhu Pears from Chenggong

1. Raw: There is a saying that raw pears “clear the heat from the six internal organs when eaten raw and nourish the yin of the five internal organs when cooked.” Thus, eating raw pears can significantly alleviate symptoms such as a dry, itchy, and sore throat, hoarseness, constipation, and dark urine in patients with upper respiratory tract infections.

2. Juice: By juicing the pears or adding a few slices of Fattousa (Flos Ophiopogonis), Winter Melon seeds, and a of rock sugar, boiling and drinking the concoction can moisturize the throat and replenish body fluids, especially beneficial for those suffering from dry throats due to dry weather or a fiery constitution.

3. Steamed Pears with Rock Sugar: Steamed pears with rock sugar is a traditional Chinese food therapy. They can nourish the lungs, relieve coughing, and soothe the throat effectively.

4. Pear Beverages: “Pear Paste Candy” is renowned both domestically and internationally. It is made by pears with honey and is particularly effective for those suffering from chronic coughs due to lung heat.
