History and Folklore
The production of tea in Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County has a long history, and it is one of the 42 tea-producing regions mentioned in “The Classic of Tea” by Lu Yu, the “Tea Sage.” According to the “Xiang County Annals” of the Republic of China period, the best Xiangzhou teas include the yellow-green Qingshan tea with a fragrant and smooth taste, Dongwen tea from Dazhang Township, and the slightly red Yaotea from the Yao Mountains, which greatly aids digestion without losing its flavor overnight. The locations referred to as “Qingshan,” “Dongwen,” and “Yao Mountain” are all within the territory of Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County. There is also the Biniu tea produced in Luoxiang Village, Luoyun Township.
During the Qing Dynasty, the local government presented the tea as a tribute to the emperor. Locals carefully preserved the Gu Yu tea they harvested for treating dysentery and cough.
In recent years, numerous wild tea colonies have been discovered within Jinxiu County. These resources are abundant and rare. According to relevant experts, some ancient tea trees in Jinxiu County are hundreds to thousands of years old and belong to the tree or semi-tree types, with large, medium, small, and leaf varieties.
In 2014, the protected area for Jinxiu Black Tea was 4,000 hectares, with an annual output of 3,100 tons.
