Historical Folklore

“Streamside Yellow Herb” is a folk with many common names in different places, mainly wind-blood grass, hand-rub yellow, yellow juice grass, fragrant tea plant, etc. Although not recorded in ancient texts, as a liver-clearing and bile-promoting drug, it has been used for over a thousand years in the Lianzhou area. The habit of boiling water from streamside yellow herb as “cooling tea” for summer consumption is still prevalent among Lianzhou residents. It got its name due to its preference for growing in moist areas near streams and valleys and the dark -yellow juice that comes out when its fresh leaves are crushed. Modern publications such as “Handbook of Common Chinese Herbs,” “Common Herbal Medicines Used in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Guangdong,” “Compendium of Chinese Herbal Medicines Nationwide,” and “Chinese Materia Medica Dictionary” have all included this herb and provided botanical illustrations.

According to Buddhist scriptures, Liang Dynasty Taoist master Liao Chong once practiced alchemy and cultivation on Mount Fushan, which is located in the town of Baoguan, Lianzhou City, one of the 49th blessed lands in China. It is said that in a certain year during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, a strange epidemic swept through the Lianshan Commandery (-day Lianzhou). Liao Chong brewed a decoction from square-stemmed bitter herbs found near the streams around Mount Fushan for the people, and those who drank the bitter herb decoction saw their jaundice and swelling quickly subside, and their health gradually recovered. This news spread far and wide, and within a short , people living within several dozen miles knew about this miraculous herb called “streamside yellow herb.”
